Asphalt ovens play a crucial role in construction projects, especially when it comes to preparing and testing asphalt mixtures. However, choosing the right asphalt oven for your needs can be a daunting task. In this guide, we will delve into the world of asphalt ovens, helping you understand their importance, factors to consider, different types available, safety features to watch out for, and maintenance tips to ensure their longevity.
An asphalt oven like the Troxler ICO NCAT is a specialized piece of equipment designed specifically to burn off the asphalt leaving clean aggregate which can be analyzed for gradation. The loss in weight resulting from the burn is directly related to asphalt content. By simply comparing the "before" and "after" weights of the material, the asphalt content can be assessed. Ignition ovens are a much more user safe and friendly method of removing the asphalt from the aggregate compared to the centrifuge extraction method as it does not involves handling any harmful chemicals or repeated washing. Understanding your region is important as well, however, as the high temperatures of these ovens can degrade lime aggregates which requires some corrections to be done. If you work in an area that uses limestone aggregates commonly for asphalt then you may find yourself using the centrifuge extraction method.
It is important to verify that the asphalt being used in construction meets the mix design standards. The amount of asphalt binder in a mix plays a large role in how the pavement will react to use and weather. Too little binder and the pavement will crack prematurely, too much and the pavement will rut. Taking field samples and testing them ensures that the product being used matched the designed specs that are approved for that particular load and climate. Furthermore, once the binder has been removed, the remaining aggregate can be put through sieve analysis to confirm that the proportions of aggregate sizes also match the specified ranges.
