Sieve Analysis of Fine Aggregates

Sieve analysis is an essential procedure for evaluating the particle size distribution of fine aggregates and ensuring the quality and consistency of these materials in construction.

The quality of sieves used is critical as it can have a significant impact on the accuracy of the results. Poor quality sieves can lead to inaccurate readings, affecting the overall accuracy of the analysis. Quality can be determined by the material and construction of the sieve. The material used should be strong enough to resist wear and tear during the sieving process, as well as being corrosion resistant. It should also have a smooth surface with no irregularities or deformations.

In addition to the material, the construction of the sieve should also be taken into account. The sieve should be of a uniform thickness, with no thinning or widening in any area, and it should also be checked for any irregularities or deformations in the mesh, as this can affect the size of the particles that can pass through. Look for any signs of wear, such as scratches or dents as these can affect the accuracy of the sieve analysis and make it easier for smaller particles to pass through the sieve.

Steps in Sieve Analysis

1. The first step is to prepare the sample by combining it in a sample pan or bag.

2. The sieves are then stacked on top of each other with the largest openings at the top and the smallest openings at the bottom.

3. The sample is placed on the top sieve and is agitated using a mechanical shaker as shown in Figure 1. The particles in the sample pass through the sieves and are collected in pans or containers beneath each sieve.

4. Once the sample has been sieved, the next step is to weigh the material collected in each pan or container.

5. The weight of each fraction is then expressed as a percentage of the total weight of the sample. This allows the size distribution of the particles in the sample to be plotted on a graph, which is known as a particle size distribution curve.
